Ram Nath Kovind has been elected as India’s 14th President. Mr. Kovind defeated opposition’s Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker by an overwhelming margin of 65% votes in the Electoral College. The 71 year old will be the first BJP member and the second dalit to be elected president. In a total of 4,896 voters which includes 4,120 MLAs and 776 elected MPs, Mr Kovind received 2930 votes with a value of 7,02,044. Flowers and extra security had arrived at the former Bihar governor's home in Delhi long before the official announcement and sweets were passed around at his hometown in Uttar PradeshMr Kovind will be sworn in on July 25th.
