Rahul Gandhi to take over as Congress President today

New Delhi : Rahul Gandhi is set to take over as Congress President at a function at the Congress Party headquarters on Saturday. He will receive a formal certificate of being elected party president from the Central Election Authority President Mullapally  Ramachandran. Rahul, who was the party vice- president for four year since 2013, will succeed his mother Sonia Gandhi. On Friday, Sonia Gandhi announced her retirement as Congress president but not from politics. Asked what role she will assume after Rahul Gandhi takes over the reins of the party, she told media persons: “My role is to retire”. Sonia became Congress president in 1998 and steered the 132- year –old party for nearly two decades.

At the handing over ceremony on Saturday, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, current and former Chief Ministers, MPs, senior Congress leaders, and all PCC chiefs and delegates will be present.
