Watermelon snow spotted in Montana

A strange phenomenon  has been observed at the Grinnell Glacier in Montana. The molten snow of the area is red in colour and hence is known as "watermelon snow". The phenomenon is caused by a particular kind of red-pigmented algae known as Chlamydomonas nivalis, which contains a pigment that creates bright red hues after combining with snow. The red coloured snow is said to have a light sweet smell, which gave it the tag of "watermelon snow".
