Kochi: Ever since the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the regulator body for teacher education in the country revised the duration of B.Ed course to two years from one year, it had seen significant decrease in the students applying for the course. Of the 190 colleges, including government, private and university centres, 37 private colleges have already been closed down.
Even though the decision on increasing course duration is pointed out as a good decision academically many are reluctant as they can spend the same time to complete a PG course instead. “Earlier, students used to join the course without a second thought as the duration was just one year. Now any candidate will think twice before joining the course’’ says Syed Mohammed, vice-present of the Self-Financing BEd College Management Association.
