Indian scientists discover antibiotic-producing bacteria

University of Hyderabad researchers have discovered a new antibiotic-producing bacteria species, isolated from an aquatic plant Hydrilla in their campus lake. The species, Planctopirus hydrillae, could help overcome the challenge of antibiotic resistance in disease-causing germs. The bacterium also cleans up ammonia waste, which is a growing environmental concern, said Professor Venkata Ramana.
