Bridge Collapses at Florida: 4 dead, Many Trapped

Miami: A 174-foot bridge at Florida International University collapsed on Thursday afternoon at least 4 people dead. The bridge came down crashing on to a number of cars and pedestrians. At least eight cars have crushed under the bridge, confirmed Florida Highway Patrol officials.

At least 8 cars are feared to be trapped underneath. The injured people were rushed to a nearby hospital. A rescue operation is underway near Florida International university. Aerial footage of the scene showed that several cars were crushed underneath the bridge.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first-responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them” university wrote.

The bridge was installed just 5 days ago. It was supposed to open to the public in early 2019 and withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The construction of the bridge was still going on. A team of 15 investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have reached the spot.

Reacting to the installation of the bridge near the university, FIU President Mark Rosenberg had said, “ FIU is about building bridges and student safety. We are filled with pride and satisfaction at seeing this engineering feat come to life and connect our campus to the surrounding community where thousands of our students live”.
