At least 37 people died in a massive fire that broke out in a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo on Sunday, Russian news agencies reported, citing local authorities. Initial reports by the Investigative Committee, which investigates high-profile crimes and reports directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said as many as 35 people could be missing. The blaze started in a trampoline room at the mall's playground for children .More than 250 firefighters, rescuers, hospital and emergency services were deployed at the site.
Some 200 animals that lived in the mall's petting zoo are also feared dead because of suffocation. Around 1,200 meters of roofing and floors in the building have collapsed, an emergency services official said. There was no immediate indication of the cause of the fire. Although many parts of the mall consisting of cinemas, restaurants and shops were burned black and filled with dense smoke, firefighters evacuated more than 100.
