New Delhi : After the meeting about Presidential candidate , which was attended by the Left, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), DMK and the National Confrence and other parties , Congress president Sonia Gandhi announced the candidature of party leader Meira Kumar for the presidential election. “We have 17 opposition leaders present here and all of us have decided to jointly field Meira Kumar as a candidate for the forthcoming election for the President of India,” said Sonia Gandhi.
At the Meeting, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Sharad Pawar proposed three names- Miera Kumar, Bhalchandra Mungekar and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. But from all these Dalith leaders, Sonia Gandhi as well as Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee and BSP supremo Mayawati have supported Miera Kumar’s candidature. Also all opposition parties supported Sonia Gandhi, with Miera Kumar’s selection against Ram Kovind. The stage is set for a Dalit Vs Dalit contest for the country’s top constitutional post.
