Thiruvananthapuram : The dawn-to-dusk hartall called by 30 dalit organisations is progressing in the state.nDalit organisations are staging protest march at Thiruvananthapuram. It is reported that protestors are blocking vehicles and laying siege on road here. Meanwhile, Police arrested dalit activist and Aadivasi Gothra Mahasabha leader Geethaanandan for allegedly blocking vehicles at Kochi Another 15 people were accompanying Geethanandhan were also held. Activists namely CS Murali and VC Jenni were also arrested. But Geethanandan responded that they had not blocked vehicles. Activists who turned violent during the protest pelted stones at KSRTC bus at Valappad in Thrissur. KSRTC bus driver injured in the attack. Dalit activists are block vehicles in various parts of the state. Police arrested 11 people for blocking vehicles at Alappuzha.
Private buses are not operating service in Pathanamthitta District. In Kottayam,KSRTC has temporarily cancelled service followed by the protest. The hartal is called demanding a judicial probe into the police firing during the Bharat Bandh on April 2, in protest over the dilution of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act.Kerala Vyapari Vyasvasayi Ekopana Samiti also refused to support the hartal and announced the shops will be open on Monday.
Police has beefed up security across the state considering the chances of violence in the background of hartal. DGP Loknath Behera informed that stringent action will be takne, if traffic is disrupted.Meanwhile, none of the political parties extended support to hartal. University of Calicut, Kerala University of Health Sciences and Kannur university have postponed the examinations scheduled today in the wake of hartal. The rescheduled date will be announced later.
