Thiruvananthapuram : Heralding prosperity and harmony, malayalees across the world celebrate Vishu today. Vishu is Known as the harvest festival of Kerala which falls on first solar month of Medam and it marks the Malayalam new year. On Vishu day, people begin the day by seeing ‘Vishukani’ with idol of Lord Krishna, Kani vellari, Kanikonna and many items which mark prosperity. ‘Vishukani’ which also include fruits and vegetable represent hope of a prosperous year. Elders give ‘VishuKaineettam’ that is some amount of momey to younger ones as a gift on the occasion. People celebrate the day with grand vishu sadya and burst firecrackers.
Various clubs and organisations have arranged various programmes and games on the occasion.Restaurants are having good sale of vishu sadya . It is reported that bank authorities have deposited enough money in ATMs to avoid complaints related to shortage of cash due to the continuous bank holidays.
