CWG 2018: India's gold medalist Poonam Yadav attacked

Varanasi : Weightlifter Poonam Yadav, who won India a gold medal in the ongoing  Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast was attacked with bricks and stones by unidentified assailants when she was visting a relative in Varanasi. When her father, uncle and brother tried to intervene they to were beaten up. Amid heavy stone pelting and ruckus the police team escorting her managed to save her and bring her out of  the melee.

According to police, the attack emanated from an old land dispute  between a relative of Poonam and a neighbouring village head.When Ms Yadav tried to intervene and solve the problem, she too was attacked . Then  poonam sought protection from the police . Poonam Yadav won gold for India  in the 69 kg category by lifting 100 kg in the snatch.
