The runners up for the last edition of the World Cup are set for a shocking exit in the group stages following an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Croatia.
The first half of the match was evenly poised with both teams having nearly the same ball possession and missing a crucial chance a piece. Argentina’s Meza missed an open post following a confusoion between defender Lovren and goal keeper Subasic. Croatia’s Mandzukic headed a ball wide with no pressure what so ever. Both teams were also lucky to keep all 11 men on the pitch during the first half as Croatia’s Rebic and Argentina’s Mercado could have easily seen red following their harsh tackle.
The second half opened up to a slow start until the 53rd minute where the Argentine stopper – Caballero gifted Rebic the ball which he quickly positioned behind the back of the net. Argentina tried to get back into the game but the way they conceded demoralized the team and the frustrations could even be seen on the Argentine skipper’s face who had yet another abysmal international match. Messi had 2 less touches on the ball than his goalkeeper in the first half. Things went from bad to worse pretty soon as Modric twisted and turned to open up some space from Otamendi who was stuck to him to fire a shot a shot from outside the box giving them a 2 goal advantage. The final nail in the coffin came from the boot of Rakitic who had to just roll the ball on to the net with Caballero caught out of position.
Argentina had put up a pretty average performance while Croatia was, in truth heavily looked down upon. Croatia boasts a midfield that can easily be compared to nations such as Spain and Germany especially with the likes of Modric, Rakitic, Perisic and Brozovic pulling the strings.
Argentina have to now hope that Iceland does not win and draw their remaining matches any other outcome can out their fate in their own hands.
