Sanju box office collection: While it is still inching towards the Rs 300 crore mark at the domestic box office, when it comes to the worldwide box office collection, Sanju has grossed over Rs 500 crore making it one of Bollywood’s biggest films overseas. The Rajkumar Hirani directed Sanjay Dutt biopic starring Ranbir Kapoor has also become the second highest grossing Bollywood film of 2018.
The Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanjay Dutt biopic titled Sanju has been one of the biggest success stories of 2018 in Bollywood. After becoming the second-highest grosser of 2018, only after the Deepika Padukone starrer Padmaavat, Sanju is inching close to the Rs 300 crore mark having made over Rs 295 crore so far at the domestic box-office. However, when it comes to the worldwide collection of the film, it has crossed the Rs 500 crore mark. Ever since its release, the film has been getting raving reviews and positive word of mouth from fans and critics alike.
Bollywood celebrities too have showered Sanju with love, affection and praise. Even sports legends like Sachin Tendulkar have had a word of praise for Ranbir Kapoor and the performance of the supporting cast. Earlier today, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh mentioned in a tweet that the Rajkumar Hirani directed Sanju had in fact become one of the biggest Bollywood films at the global box-office. “#Sanju continues its DREAM RUN… Crosses ₹ 500 cr mark worldwide [Gross BOC] after Week 2… Breakup: India Nett BOC: ₹ 295.18 cr, India Gross BOC: ₹ 378.43 cr, Overseas Gross BOC: ₹ 122 cr, Worldwide Gross total: ₹ 500.43 cr,” he said.
News film critic Gaurang Chauhan too gave Sanju a positive review. He said: “Ranbir Kapoor is just fantastic in the film. After the first few scenes, you'll forget Ranbir and will only look at him as Sanjay Dutt. After watching the trailer I wasn't impressed by Paresh Rawal but buoy he nailed it. His scenes with Ranbir will surely make you look for tissues Manisha Koirala still holds the screen like no other. Her first scene where she mimics Hollywood actors is so heartwarming. Jim Sarbh has the penchant for playing slimy characters and just like Padmaavat he is at the top of his game. Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor and Boman Irani are fine in their roles.”
However, no film is perfect and Sanju does have its share of criticism as well. A number of social commentators and fans have expressed their disappointment with the film highlighting aspects like the absence of Sanju’s first wife Richa Sharma and daughter Trishala Dutt in the film. Some are also dissatisfied with how every mistake of Sanjay Dutt in the film has been blamed on circumstances.
To the last allegation, Sanjay himself responded in an interview with India Today saying: “I don’t think anyone would spend Rs 30-40 crore to change his image. That is too much of an amount. I have told the truth and the truth has been accepted by India, and the box office collection shows that.”
