Why no grievance officer in India yet: SC asks govt, WhatsApp

The Supreme Court on 27 August issued a notice to WhatsApp Inc, the IT Ministry and the Finance Ministry, demanding a detailed reply as to why the popular messaging platform hadn’t appointed a grievance officer in India to address concerns arising from its usage. This comes days after Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad's meeting with WhatsApp CEO Chris Daniels during which he asked him to appoint a grievance officer and comply with Indian laws. The notice comes in the wake of at least 30 incidents of mob lynching, reportedly arising from fake news of child lifters being forwarded and circulated on WhatsApp.
