English physicist Peter Higgs in a 1964 paper independently predicted the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle which gives matter its mass. Higgs’ paper was initially rejected citing “it did not warrant rapid publication”. In 2012, the particle was confirmed by experiments at CERN’s 27 km long accelerator LHC. Higgs was then jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on October 8, 2013.
