New Delhi: Delhi Rose Avenue court on Thursday sent former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to 14 days judicial custody in the INX Media case. During the judicial custody, P Chidambaram, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last month, will be lodged in the Tihar Jail till September 19. Chidambaram will be kept in Jail No 7 meant for economic offenders, according to reports. His son Karti Chidambaram was lodged in the same jail.
Apart from economic offenders, accused involved in crimes against women, including molestation cases, are also kept in Jail No 7, which has a few tightly-packed wards and a couple of cells, smaller in size. The court has allowed Chidambaram to carry his medicines to the Tihar Jail. Since the Congress leader has Z-level security cover, the court directed that Chidambaram be kept in a separate cell.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also assured the court that there will be adequate security for Chidambaram in the Tihar Jail. While inmates sleep on the floor, senior citizens are provided with a 'wooden takht' without a mattress. Hence, Chidambaram, 73, would be provided with a cot. His cell is likely to have a western-style toilet. Chidambaram will have to eat food prepared in the prison. He can also order snacks cooked in the jail canteen.
"He will be housed in Jail No 7. We have not yet received the court order. Adequate arrangements will be made in accordance with the order," an official of the Tihar Jail was quoted by News18 as saying. Chidambaram is accused of misusing his position as Union Finance Minister in 2007 while facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy, in a tweet, said Chidambaram along with other criminals in other cases will be taken to the Tihar Jail in a police van. Earlier today, a Delhi court granted anticipatory bail to Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in both the ED and the CBI matters relating to the Aircel Maxis case.
