Delhi likely to have 1 lakh COVID-19 cases by June end: Delhi govt committee

India overtook Spain to become the fifth worst coronavirus-hit country with total cases reaching 2,46,628 after a jump of 9,971 cases in the last 24 hours. This is the biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases so far. The country's coronavirus death toll has increased to 6,929. Meanwhile, the number of active cases is 1,20,406.

A five-member committee formed by the Delhi government said in its report that the national capital is likely to have at least one lakh COVID-19 cases by June end. The committee has advised Delhi government to arrange for an additional 15,000 beds. The committee was formed to manage the overall COVID-19 preparedness in hospitals and augment health infrastructure in Delhi.

Amid rising coronavirus cases in the Union Territory, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that Delhi government hospitals and some private hospitals will be available for Delhi people only, while Central hospitals will remain open for all. Kejriwal said that the government had received responses from more than 7.5 lakh people and 90% of them want the same.
