Thiruvananthapuram : The social forestry wing of the Forest Department has kickstarted its activities for the protection of Vamanapuram riverbank in Vithura village panchayat. Forest Minister K. Raju inaugurated the first phase of the project, which envisages planting of 6,000 saplings of Ramacham on one hectare space on the river bank , on Tuesday. Local MLA K.S. Sabarinathan presided over the function.
Inaugurating the project, the forest minister said protection of rivers and other waterbodies was the need of the hour. The minister called upon people's representatives to ensure timely meetings of Jana Jagratha Samithis for taking decisions which are beneficial to the public.
"If village panchayats prepare and submit projects aimed at protecting rivers, the government will provide adequate support to make them a reality. From now on, the forest department will not be planting trees like Acacia and Mangium in inhabited areas. For coming generations, we now have to put an end to the exploitation of nature in the name of development.Raju said while distributing the Ramacham saplings for planting.
