Hong Kong postpones key election for a year as COVID-19 cases surge

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has announced that the city's legislative council election, which was to be held on September 6, will be postponed by a year due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. Hong Kong reported 121 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. Earlier, authorities disqualified 12 pro-democracy candidates from contesting, citing reasons including opposition to China's national security law.
