Mumbai to monitor over 1,500 UK returnees for mutated COVID-19 strain

The BMC is monitoring over 1,500 people who arrived in Mumbai between November 25 and December 22 from the UK, where a mutated strain of coronavirus has been detected. The BMC stated, "The UK returnees will be closely monitored and our teams have started following up with them. They will also have to go through COVID-19 tests if required."

Telangana govt forms 20 teams to track UK returnees

A total of 20 teams have been formed in Telangana to track 1,200 UK returnees to the state since December 8. "By genome sequencing, we will come to know if any of them have been affected by the new variant of the virus," Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao said. The new strain of coronavirus is 70% more transmissible.

India has reported 23,067 new COVID-19 cases and 336 more deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 1,01,46,845 and the death toll to 1,47,092. Further, as many as 24,661 people have recovered in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases in the country stood at 2,81,919, according to data from Health Ministry.
