India reports 12,584 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hrs, lowest since June; Tamil Nadu, Karnataka to reopen classes

India has reported 12,584 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest rise in the number of daily cases since June 2020. With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country reached 1,04,79,179, while 167 more deaths took the death toll to 1,51,327. The total number of active cases stood at 2,16,558.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced the reopening of schools for Classes 10 and 12 on January 19. A statement issued by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said each classroom would have only 25 students to maintain social distancing norms. The state health department will supply vitamin and zinc tablets to students to boost their immunity, the statement added.

Karnataka government will reopen classes for intermediate semesters of degree, diploma and engineering colleges from January 15, Deputy CM Ashwathnarayan CN said. After physical classes for final-year students began on November 17, there was demand to start classes for remaining grades too, he added. The decision came after Ashwathnarayan held a meeting with Higher Education Department officials.
