VPN usage is on the rise in Asian countries, the Gulf and especially the UAE. Although VPN can be used in most countries, some countries have imposed some restrictions under cyber laws.

It is illegal in many countries, including the UAE, to commit crimes using VPN and to visit websites that are banned by the government. Companies, institutions and banks in the UAE can use VPN for their in-house needs. In many Gulf countries, use VPN to make audio and video chats with their families and friends.

If VPN is used in accordance with the guidelines of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority of the UAE, it will not be illegal. But if it is misused, it can result in hefty fines and even imprisonment under the country's cyber law.

Under Article 1 of the amended UAE Cyber Law, violators face up to five years' imprisonment, a fine of not less than 500,000 dirhams and a fine of not more than 2 million dirhams or any of these. Penalties apply to those who change their computer or Internet address or use a third party address for crimes or other scams.

Qatar has the highest VPN usage in the Gulf. Consumption is 44.47 per cent, followed by the UAE with 39.91 per cent and Oman with 24.79 per cent. More and more VPNs are being used in Asian countries to access content from Western countries and to use social media, which is banned by the government. Singapore has the highest VPN usage with 29.59% downloads. In the first half of 2021, 25.27 per cent VPN downloads took place in India.
