BENGALURU: Commercial Street, one of Bengaluru’s major shopping hubs in the Central Business District (CBD), will be closed for 14 days from Monday night to rectify problems related to the recent works completed under the Smart City project. The redeveloped Commercial Street was opened by former chief minister BS Yediyurappa in July. However, the cobblestoned road soon began showing signs of damage.
Rajendra Cholan, managing director, Bengaluru Smart City Limited (BSCL), told TOI: “Vehiclular movement before adequate time for curing of the road led damage of paving stones. We have already imposed a penalty of 10% on the contractor and sought replacement of the pavers.” Cholan, while stating that Rs 1.2 crore — of the Rs 3.8 crore budget — had already been released, said due to the damage, the road will again be closed for redevelopment.
Another source said the pavers will be replaced before starting work on the carriageway. Work on laying pipelines has already been completed.
Redevelopment using concrete pavers in yellow, magenta, grey and brown was recommended by directorate of urban land transport, inspired by Europe streets. The project was announced in 2019. Work began in May 2020 but the pandemic delayed it.
