10 dead, several missing due to the Landslides in Kottayam's Koottickal

Kottayam: Three bodies of members of the same family - Ottalankal house - have been retrieved from Plappally while three are missing. They have been identified as Sini, 35, her daughter Sona, 10, and Sini's husband's mother Claramma Joseph, 65. Those who are missing include Sini's husband Martin, 47, their two daughters Sneha, 13, and Sandra, 9. The body of Olickal Shallet, 29, was retrieved from the vicinity on Sunday. Four more bodies were recovered later on the day which are yet to be identified.

Eight, including 5 children, went missing in multiple landslides occurred in Idukki's Kokkayar panchayat at Makkochi and Poovanchi areas where three houses were washed away. Seven of them belongs to one family. The locals have rescued 17 people from the spot. Search for Kalapurakkal Naseer's family is on.

With extremely heavy rainfall lashing Kottayam and Idukki districts and landslides occurring in the eastern parts, the State has sought the assistance of the Army and the Air Force for rescue operations.

The Army, NDRF, police and the Fire Force along with the locals began rescue operations on Sunday morning at Koottickal and Kokkayar panchayats where over a dozen people are listed to be missing due to numerous landslides accompanied by heavy downpour since Saturday.

At least four landslips have been reported from various parts of the Kottayam district. Koottickal was the worst affected, where 8 people died and 5 others are reportedly missing in the landslide. Three houses have been swept away in floodwaters at Plappally in Koottickal village.
