Kannur: The Railway has decided to remove the number zero given to special trains and resume the previous code numbers. The train numbers will continue to start with one. The number of intercity trains will start with two and that of MEMU trains with six.

The railway has already changed the train numbers starting with zero in its announcements. It will be changed in the IRCTC online tickets and the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app shortly. The passengers expect that the season tickets and general tickets will resume when train services are restored to normal.

When train services resumed after Covid outbreak, the Railway started only long distance trains such as Rajadhani Express. Then the first digit of the number was changed from 1 to 0. The train fares also increased and general coaches had only reserved tickets. Besides, IRCTC collected Rs 17 as service charge.

The passengers who had season tickets and boarded general coaches by mistake were fined Rs 350. There were confusions regarding online ticket booking of special trains including Express. Three trains from Mangaluru to Thiruvananthapuram were marked as Thiruvananthapuram-Mangaluru Express. People happened to book wrong trains due to the similar numbers starting with 0. Now everything will be back to normal.
