Sabarimala temple to open on Monday; pilgrims to be allowed from Tuesday

Sabarimala: The Lord Ayyappa Temple here will open for Mandala Pooja on Monday. However, considering the prevailing rain situation in Kerala, spot booking for devotees has been stopped.

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday. With heavy rains lashing the state, especially the southern districts, restrictions will be imposed on devotees for the next four days, the state government informed.

Those who had their slots booked via the virtual queue system will be permitted for darshan on later dates. The temple had been all set to welcome devotees from November 16, the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam.

Earlier, five special counters had been opened at Nilakkal for spot booking. Devotees are also prohibited from taking the customary dip in the Pampa river prior to their ascend to the shrine.

On November 15, the incumbent Melshanti V K Jayaraj Potti will open the sanctum sanctorum of the temple at 5 pm and will light the lamp. Melsanthi-designate of Sabarimala temple, Kaleekkal Madathil N Parameshwaran Nampoothiri of Thattarambalam in Mavelikara and Melsanthi-designate of Malikappuram temple, Thantri Kuravakkodu Illathu Shambu Nampoothiri of Panniyankara in Kozhikode will assume charge on the day.Thantri Kandararu Mahesh Mohanaru will conduct a Kalasha Pooja and Abhishekam during the occasion.

Earlier, the government had decided to allow 30,000 devotees er day to have darshan at Sabarimala.
