Chelsea travelled to the new Wanda Metropolitano and secured 3 points from the ever disciplined Athletico Madrid. It was the first time the non-white side of Madrid lost to an English team at Home and their second defeat at home in 24 Champions League ties. Chelsea are back after a year of absence and it does not seem the leave effected their performance. Conte sent a strong side and just like the experts thought Athletico had all their 11 men behind the ball and put up a strong defensive unit. There were hardly any openings or even passing lanes that Chelsea could use and that frustration might have crept into David Luiz who conceded a penalty when he tugged on Lucas’s shirt in the event of a corner which was dispatched with ease by Greizmann before half time. Chelsea leveled on the 60th minute when a sublime cross from Hazard was met with Moratta. The human dynamo that is Athletico Madrid did not stop working and foiling any chance for Chelsea to capitalize. It was in the last minute of stoppage time Willian in a free kick moved the ball from one side to another till they got their deserved chance as Marcos Alonso sent a low cross to be met by the substitute Batshuay who slotted in goal wards and was the final kick of the game.
Chelsea had more of the possession and played the better football. The other highlights that needs to be mentioned is the superb performance displayed by Eden Hazard who was unarguably the best player on the pitch. Chelsea’s new signing and scorer of the first goal Moratta was received at the stadium with boo’s and whistles; probably due to his tenure at Real Madrid. Diego Costa was also present at the stadium. Costa was bought by Chelsea from Athletico 3 seasons back but fell out of favor from his current boss Conte and last week was signed back by the Spanish side.
