Supreme Court finally Righting a Wrong

The Supreme Court today made a landmark decision in a previous unconstitutional law that persisted which stated that a man can have sex with a minor girl provided they are bound by marriage and she is above the age of 15. The Indian Penal Code defines sex with a girl below 18 - with or without her consent - as a crime. However, an exception is made if the girl is his wife and not below 15 (IPC section 375; exception 2). The Judge made it clear that "Exception in rape law is discriminatory, capricious and arbitrary. It violates bodily integrity of the girl child."

From a le man’s perspective I was not aware of the exception clause. I was under the belief that one can only get legally married at the age of 18 at least in the case of girls, but this shows that us Indians took 70 years to finally register the fact that girls had their own rights and say when it comes to the act of sex. In honesty our nation has developed 10 folds in the last decade in regards to the role and power that we give to our women, but it extremely saddening to know that in the last 5 years there has been a 277% increase in the rape cases.

No longer is violating a woman’s modesty worthy of being news, it is common that only when someone famous is involved does it register as breaking news or latest news. India has advanced so far in almost all genres so much that as we speak, we are currently hosting the Under 17 FIFA World Cup in our very soil. I hope a day comes that men treat women with the same dignity and respect they deem.
