University in eastern China is offering a weight-loss course to raise awareness about the issues due to obesity, in the campus. The year-long course is only available to those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) higher than 28. Around 50 students are encouraged to lose weight through a combination of regular exercise and diet control during the span of 12 months of the course. 60% of student’s grade will be decided on how much weight they lose.
The university began the program after realizing that their students are gaining heavier. Nearly 13% of their students in the first and second year were overweight, Jiangsu Television reported. After a trial program, physical education instructor Zhuo Quanfu introduced the course into the curriculum. Most of the students who applied for a place were admitted only after they cleared the normal physical education class tests including height, weight, heart rate, blood pressure and lung capacity measured.
